Julie K. Weisenberg, Director
Sorenson Communications Inc of Manhattan
I began as a sociolinguist PhD student researching the use of American Sign Language (ASL). During that journey, I investigated the use of phonetic mouthing by hearing bilingual bimodals and English loanword adaptation in the deaf community. I also studied audience design (how people tailor communication for particular partners), the influence of communication technology on spoken and written English and ASL, the integration of gesture and speech in human language, and the use of mouth gestures by native deaf signers. I was a TESOL instructor and a Lecturer of linguistics at Stony Brook University for several years before becoming Director at Sorenson Communications Inc of Manhattan in 2011. I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter and have been teaching ASL for the last ten years.
As a Director of Sorenson Communications, I pride myself on maintaining a warm, professional, supportive environment for our video interpreters. We will naturally serve our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing customers well by never losing sight of our integrity and passion. This is the essence of "Manhattan VRS".
