Student Testimonials

Statement 1: "I like that you are flexible, open-minded, and committed. The way you present the class makes it easier for us to share ideas -not that I do - but I learn a lot from the different views from other students. Having them engage in discussions, sharing their experiences with the rest of the class makes the class look like a hands-on kind of course, which aids in understanding of topics in general since its like we are actually applying what we learn. As already mentioned, I like your open-mindedness; you do not feed students the "gospel truth", but are willing to hear and accommodate the views of others, which is really rare in grad school. Making follow-ups on questions that come up in class is also one of your strong points. "
- Cynthia Mkoko (Second Language Acquisition, Stony Brook University)

Statement 2: "SUNYSB couldn't have had a more ideal professor for the courses that Dr Weisenberg has taught me namely Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics and currently Bilingualism. These are courses that I believe requires someone who is knowledgeable when it comes to linguistics in general and not merely linguistics as it pertains to the USA. Despite the fact that Dr Weisenberg has great knowledge of linguistics in general she is always eager to learn from the students from the different language and geographic backgrounds that are often part of her classes. As a TESOL major I believe that teaching is a very productive binary in which the teacher/professor not only teaches but equally learns form the learners, and Dr Weisenberg is an excellent example of someone who does this and balances teaching and learning well by involving learners as much as possible in the learning process. Her flexibility and caring tendency towards the student makes being part her class a joy and not just another grad school. GREAT PROFESSOR!!
- Selma Ashikuti, State University of New York at Stony Brook

Statement 3: "Dr. Weisenberg incorporates technology and visual media into her lessons in a very useful and effective manner. Her presentations are filled with examples and studies that support the topic of discussion. Films, ads, and other realia help present topics in a way that is relatable to real life and sparks interesting discussions and debates."
- Megan Chiusaroli, LIN 542-Sociolinguistics, Stony Brook University, Spring 2010

Statement 4: "I loved the fact that you responded to your students' emails at a timely manner, that's very rear for some professors. You made the class worthwhile with your enthusiasm for your profession, you treated all of your students fairly & you did great in explaining yourself whenever I didn't understand a gesture that was made. And my final thought is, I liked that you made sure the class wasn't allowed to speak because the class became a proper learning community for a student to really understand & learn ASL"
- Donnica Mason, Stony Brook University, Summer 2010

Statement 5: "Elementary ASL was of the best courses I've taken throughout my college career. For a summer class, I had my doubts and already established anxiety about the boringness of the class and material. However, I was proved wrong! The class was taught completely in silence, which truly made it much easier for me to grasp the new material. It forced me to use what I had learned, instilling it in my mind and making ASL feel natural. Dr. Weisenberg was an amazing professor! She was enthusiastic and expressive which made listening to her a pleasant experience. She repeated signs often, allowing the class to really understand new signs and use them properly. She was funny and always created conversation with the class. As a professor, she was laid back and understanding. I never felt embarrassed or pressured to perform. She was caring and quick to help when I found myself confused. Overall, this class was incredibly enjoyable and not only do I remember almost all of the material I learned, but I truly miss not being in class and interacting with her and my fellow peers. Her class is the best!!
